MEZUZOTH OF DJERBAN JEWS IN THE HOUMT SOUK JEWISH DISTRICT

A mezuzah (Hebrew: מְזוּזָה "doorpost"; plural: מְזוּזוֹת‎ mezuzot) is a piece of parchment, known as a klaf, contained in a decorative case and inscribed with specific Hebrew verses from the Torah (Deuteronomy 6:4–9 and 11:13–21. These verses consist of the Jewish prayer Shema Yisrael, beginning with the phrase: "Hear, O Israel, the Lord (is) our God, the Lord is One".

In the Ashkenazic tradition the case containing KLAF is tilted where as in the Sephardic tradition, the case is upright. Jews of Djerba follow the sephardic tradition, even though they have been in Djerba one thousand years before the Spanish Expulsion.

I took some photos of the Mezuzoth at the homes while walking around.
