WATCHING LIFE UNFOLD WHILE I READ AND WRITE DURING THIS SOCIAL ISOLATION

About six weeks ago I noticed a mother Duck and about 12 of her ducklings, present themselves. Mother needless to say was very protective and she could hide all her dozen offsprings under her wings if someone approached them.

I watched from where I was sitting and occasionally I would go and observe them unobtrusively. I was able to witness the mother took them to teach them to swim ..

Suddenly one day, the mother was no more .. the ducklings were huddled together and i looked around for their mother. A neighbour informed me that the mother had been killed in an accident (probably trying to protect her little ones). I felt very sad. I would take some oats and spread it around their paths but even at that tender age they were self sufficient in survival techniques.

It has been a couple of weeks since the mother disappeared (not of her own volition, I am sure) and today I saw the nine siblings wandering around and it gave me such a great pleasure to observe them.

WHAT IS THE INDIAN FOOD SERVED IN "INDIAN" RESTARAURANTS OUTSIDE INDIA

Landladies and Inn keepers may have offered "curried" dishes before then, but this was the first restaurant owned and operated by and an Indian, a Bengali Muslim

Sake Dean Mohammed, who hobnobbed with the NABOBS, returned British from India, was under the tutelage of an Irish officer of the British East India Company and married an Irish lady and settled down in London.

In the early 20th century, sailors from what was to become Bangladesh opened eating establishments in London for members of their own communities, which started becoming more commercial in the 1940s. Following a war in their home country, many Bangladeshis came to London in 1971, and the curry house industry started in earnest.

London’s first Indian restaurants after Mahomed’s short-lived effort came a century later. According to a detailed account in Peter and Colleen Grove’s Mood Food/ Menu Magazine, Salut e Hind was the first to open in Holborn in 1911, followed by The Kohinoor in Roper Street, and Curry Café in Commercial Street in the 1920s. The most successful and influential was The Shafi in Gerard Street, which opened in 1920. These were all aimed at Indian diners, but when Edward Palmer opened Veeraswamy in Piccadilly in 1926, he revolutionised London's Indian dining scene, making it fashionable for everyone to eat Indian.

Veeraswamy is an Indian restaurant in London, located at 99-101 Regent Street. It was opened in 1926 by Edward Palmer, an Anglo-Indian retired British Indian Army officer, the grandson of an English general and an Indian princess. It is the oldest surviving Indian restaurant in the United Kingdom. In its early years, Veeraswamy served Anglo-Indian cuisine, but in recent decades, based on the popularity of authentic Indian food in the UK, has served a menu of regional Indian cuisine, including dishes from PunjabLucknowKashmir, and Goa. Edward Palmer used the name E. P. Veeraswamy for his food business and the book; Veeraswamy was his grandmother's family name. Initially it was spelled Veerasawmy, it became Veeraswamy because of a printing error.  from Wikipedia

It was a pleasure to walk past this resto, while strolling along
Regent Street, that elegant street  leading from Piccadilly Square

When i was studying Medicine in London, Rice and Curry was
a staple and enjoyed visiting the many Indian restaurants in
the city of London.
It never occurred to me that the food that was being sold as
had origins outside the sub continent.
Two geographical incidents brought this home to me: Iran and
Kerala.

I had invited an Iranian friend in Kuala Lumpur for an "Indian"
restaurant.
I even remember the name. Hyderabad, a small cozy restaurant.

My friend from Iran could recognize all the dishes. I was surprised
but a friend of mine in KL with Moghul Princely origins explained
that Moghuls who ruled India for 500 years (think of Taj Mahal)
were Persian speaking people, whose court language and customs
including food was Persian.

So the Indian food that you get when you got to a Bangladeshi
owned resto whether in London or Brussels, is of Iranian origins
but the syncretism is the spices. the original Iranian dishes do not
have the spices which were added later on .

I had been traveling in Kerala by this time and I was feasting on
local food, which may have had some influences from the traders.

this is the food I had come to love and outside South India, they
are not easy to procure but there are plenty to be had in
Malaysia, Singapore, rue chapelle in Paris and the best dosai I
have had been in a resto in Colombo, Sri Lanka.

Last night, my  three close friends from Palm Beach county in South Florida invited me to eat at an INDIAN restaurant in
Lake Worth.. the menu was the usual Moghul inspired dishes,
nothing from the South of that continent.

We had a wonderful time together. we sat outside and the service
was unobtrusive . a nice Malbec wet our tonsils and the dishes
arrived, cooked to compliment the wonderful conversation we
were having
Samosa, one would think it is as "Indian" as Narendra Modi?
Unfortunately no, Samosa is of Persian origin, reached India through the turkic invasions from Uzbekistan and Tajikstan (Moghuls).
South Asian samosa has central Asian or middle eastern origin.[11] The samosa appeared in the Indian subcontinent, following the invasion of the Central Asian Turkic dynasties in the region.[12] A praise of the precursor of the samosa (as sanbusaj) can be found in a ninth century poem by Persian poet Ishaq al-Mawsili. Recipes are found in 10th–13th-century Arab cookery books, under the names sanbusaksanbusaq, and sanbusaj, all deriving from the Persian word sanbosag. In Iran, the dish was popular until the 16th century, but by the 20th century, its popularity was restricted to certain provinces (such as the sambusas of Larestan).[3] Abolfazl Beyhaqi (995-1077), an Iranian historian, mentioned it in his history, Tarikh-e-beyhagi

I sent the photos to my friends in Iran and all of them could recognize the dishes.

One of the dishes is called Rogan Josh.
My iranian friends said. Rogan Joshi, roghan means oil, Joushi means hot and boiling and it means it is roasted in oil.
in the photos above, you see Lamb Rogan Josh above the Biryani which is also of Iranian origin.

From a food blog:
To prepare rogan josh, most cooks begin by browning their meat of choice – traditionally lamb or goat – in oil. The meat is then removed and a number of spices, including garlic, ginger, whole black pepper, cardamom, cloves, cinnamon, bay leaves, coriander and red pepper, are added to the hot oil in stages. Next, the meat is returned to the pan along with plain yogurt. The pan is then covered and cooked over low heat until the meat becomes very tender.

If you want to taste Indian food and not "Indian food", I recommend that you travel to India, after the Covid of course. In the mean time, you can enjoy, the idea of Indian food, brought to India from Iran by the Moghul emperors, improvised with local spices and exported to UK by the returning British and popularized by the Bangladeshi sailors stranded in Britain.

The best Indian cuisine, outside my dear Kerala cuisine, that i like is home cooked Awadhi cuisine of Lucknow (i have not visited the place). A good friend of mine, once prepared Awadi food at his home in Kuala Lumpur. It was just divine.

Bon Apetit

I was selecting some dark chocolates for someone, must say I did not eat one. But I know it is there if I want it.

I took this selfie at home. In the tropics there are always flowers.

I leave this moon shining when i go to sleep and today i decided to add the decoration of the facial outline of CHE (i got that in Cuba), the shining moon had come as a gift from Brasil.

Now time for a quick shower, a short anapana meditation session and into the realm of angelitos..

IS KINDNESS CONTAGIOUS: A WONDERFUL DAY IN THE LIFE OF AN ENDOCRINOLOGIST/ANTHROPOLOGIST TO THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLES

One of the pleasures of driving leisurely to the National Park to visit the Indigenous people, is to listen to BBC World Service.. It is truly, as it claims, the World's Radio Station.

This morning Claudia Hammond hosted a session of HEALTH CHECK and the title of the talk was

Is kindness contagious?

The first thing that came to my mind was the wisdom of His Holiness Dalai Lama
Today’s  talk was fascinating for me, how being KIND even more than usual normal self, can bring happiness not only to you but to others as well.

I decided to be consciously kind, to add to my regular and characteristic behaviour.
I came across a police check point and a lady police came over to check.
I engaged her in a conversation and got to know a little bit about her. She was born in the Republica Dominicana of a Dominican mother and Lebanese father and now have graduated as a rookie police. I told her that I was on my way to the Indigenous people and at all times, I made sure that there were no harsh feelings of any sort.
I thought I would do five extra kind acts during the day, but little did I realize that within one hour I had already racked up five.

the very thought of preparing myself for this day, thus putting my mind and emotions at a calmer, much more equilibrated state, the gifts began to pour in.
I had wanted to make sure one of my colleagues and her husband had enough medications. Even before I spoke to her, she handed me a platter of Sushi for my lunch as I had mentioned to her that I am a little particular about what I eat.
The third person was an indigenous person with whom I had a very pleasant conversation and we exchanged medical and social information. Dont forget to come and see me either wednesday or thursday next week, he reminded me.

I had to make sure that his Haitian born nurse is recognized for her ability as a good Home Health Nurse and we chatted about Insulin therapy and Duvalier family (no connection!). I thanked her for her help and she promised to forward me by text the health parameters tomorrow.
I was already feeling very good
Chatted amicably with some colleagues, communicated with an indigenous person who had a wild bear visit him at home. Rest of the day was spent on the welfare of the Indigenous people, and as I felt a sensation of helping (Tikkun Olam is the concept among the Jewish people), my spirits and my emotions all rose higher and higher.
Be kind not only to those who deserve it but to all the people you come across. Some are near you and some are far away.

In the podcast, they talked about a video from Thailand. Of course most Thai are devout Buddhists but that does not mean that all are compassionate.A young man helping others on his way back home from work and the completeness of his life is well portrayed. The Burmese call these MITTA , the pleasure he has is well portrayed

Later on , a study in Los Angeles was able to demonstrate that when you see someone doing an act of kindness, you tend to become kinder yourself.

I have to thank HH Dalai Lama and today BBC World Service and my own friends far and near that I thought about and also the people who allowed me to show kindness to them.

I am richer in the emotions at the end of the day..

CHARLATANS OF HEALTH:EXERCISE, OBESITY, NUTRITION AND DIABETES: A VIEW FROM THE SOCIETY OR FROM THE GROUND.

this is a continuation of the previous post, I was having some trouble with this paragraph and the video to attach to the blog.

Nowhere in the west you can show things are getting better, and many of the developing countries are sliding on the descending coat tails of the western ways of living, stress, eating and playing.

I have colleagues who might spend three hours exercising, at various levels but then would dine on Highly Processed Food. NO EXERCISE HAS BEEN INVENTED (exercise as we know of a recent origin and invented) TO COMBAT THE VARIOUS CHEMICALS THAT ARE PART OF THE AMERICAN DIET AND MORE AND MORE OF THE REST OF THE WORLD AS WELL.

EAT SIMPLE FOODS, PREFERABLY HOME COOKED. AVOID HIGHLY PROCESSED FOODS. NOT EAT TOO MUCH OF ANYTHING (AS SOMEONE SAID, IF YOU FEEL STUFFED, YOU HAVE EATEN FAR TOO MUCH)
BE ACTIVE WITH YOUR BODY. DO NOT SIT DOWN FOR MORE THAN A FEW MINUTES, GET UP AND WALK A LITTLE BIT OR AT LEAST GET UP FROM YOUR CHAIR .
PRANAYAMA OR YOGIC BREATHING, MINDFULNESS OR MEDITATION ALL HAVE LOTS OF BENEFITS NOT ONLY FOR YOUR BODY BUT YOUR MIND AND EMOTIONS AND SPIRIT AS WELL.

PS I have cut and pasted some of the information, sorry about that, but you get the gist of my thinking. The video is about 10 minutes long and if you are interested in Nutrition, it is a good watch.

EXERCISE, OBESITY, NUTRITION AND DIABETES: A VIEW FROM THE SOCIETY OR FROM THE GROUND.

There is not a single person in USA and perhaps the world who DOES NOT know that EXERCISE is good for you and a basic understanding of what foods are bad for you.

I have felt that telling a patient, already cursed with Diabetes or Obesity that they should EAT RIGHT and EXERCISE, is a high crime committed by

Doctors

Mid Level assistants to the Doctor

Chiropractors parading as Nutritionists

and the plethora of Health Educators, Personal Trainers etc etc.

If you are reading this, you can answer this simple question, will you go to a Nutritionist or a Dietician for advice about FOOD ? Most Americans seek out self proclaimed Nutritionists rather than well trained or experienced Dietitians.

US physicians are notoriously ill educated about Nutrition, let alone the other non MD care providers (forget about Functional Medicine practice, I am not even sure what it is )

Today, most medical schools in the United States teach less than 25 hours of nutrition over four years. The fact that less than 20 percent of medical schools have a single required course in nutrition, it's a scandal.May 8, 2017

The Endocrine society, the professional society that I belong to, had indicated that the majority of its members are not capable of giving appropriate and/or relevant counsel on Nutrition. Patients would listen attentively to the doctors and trust them, but may leave with a piece of paper for 1500 cal diet or a book of recipes.

EAT WELL AND EXERCISE IS THE MANTRA

but from a cultural point of view, both are intricately involved with so many other factors most of which have social or spiritual significance.

Most of us would coil away from eating a snake whereas that is not so for a large number of people of this earth. Sacred and Profane was the name of a book by famous anthropologists including Raw and Cooked by Levi Strauss, Mirceal Eliade, Mary Douglas...

Let us dissect

Usually done Quantitatively

How much?

How often?

What sort?

If you are an anthropologist or a person interested in the person of the patient

what You would want to know?

what makes it difficult for you to exercise?

space, time, social perception. In many places I have been told that if they saw you walking for anything other than enjoyment, they would think that you are either poor or recently had a heart attack or a diagnosis of Diabetes

Cardiovascular Effects and Benefits of Exercise

is widely accepted that regular physical activity is beneficial for cardiovascular health. Frequent exercise is robustly associated with a decrease in cardiovascular mortality as well as the risk of developing cardiovascular disease. Physically active individuals have lower blood pressure, higher insulin sensitivity, and a more favorable plasma lipoprotein profile. Animal models of exercise show that repeated physical activity suppresses atherogenesis and increases the availability of vasodilatory mediators such as nitric oxide. Exercise has also been found to have beneficial effects on the heart. Acutely, exercise increases cardiac output and blood pressure, but individuals adapted to exercise show lower resting heart rate and cardiac hypertrophy. Both cardiac and vascular changes have been linked to a variety of changes in tissue metabolism and signaling, although our understanding of the contribution of the underlying mechanisms remains incomplete. Even though moderate levels of exercise have been found to be consistently associated with a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk, there is evidence to suggest that continuously high levels of exercise (e.g., marathon running) could have detrimental effects on cardiovascular health. Nevertheless, a specific dose response relationship between the extent and duration of exercise and the reduction in cardiovascular disease risk and mortality remains unclear.

VISIT TO AN INDIGENOUS VILLAGE AND THEY INTRODUCE ME TO THE FOREST

Last night I felt an excitement which I couldn't explain and always reminded me of my Meskwakia teacher : What a pity you are not smart enough to understand all that we can teach you!

It was symbolic, there were dreams as well, of what awaited me, another unexpected pleasure of life.

I woke up earlier than normal and was able to catch a glimpse of the sun as it rose up in the sky. Tomorrow at this time a full moon would also be present, perhaps the sun is shining so brightly in anticipation ?
I drove leisurely to an Indigenous village, savouring the sky and the environment as i moved away from the city of recent settlers.

Last night, I had received a note from my Ticuna Indigenous friend: Mother Forest Madre Selva is sad as its children as not traversing them less this year.. I did not realize her request would be fulfilled so soon.

It takes indigenous people a while to accept outsiders, whether a foreigner like me or other immigrants to their land whether they came in 1513 (they speared one of them as they tried to land from a boat ) or in 1980 in a massive boat lift..They are all welcome, if you leave them alone..

I attended to their medical needs which are few, mainly counseling about the new diseases which have arrived amidst them.

Then one of the members of the village, said I will take you for a walk.

We walked for about a mile when we came to this clearing and a lake. you would be foolish to wade into these collections of water, as the inhabitants guard their territory well enough.

When le petite poete de côte sauvage and I was looking at the rough seas, we created a world in which , two animals, one of them spanish speaking, named Carlos and the other French speaking Francois inhabited a tropical rainforest and often communicated with us.

I told the indigenous person the story and it did not sound bizarre to her at all.But when I tell the same tale to those recent comers to this land, they would say, Francois cant speak French, he is an animal!

I should buy each of them a copy of the book, Le Petit Prince or the Little Prince.

I wanted to call out to Francois and refresh his hearing with my faulty french but there were others present who might look at me strangely.

Even though the walk was short, my indigenous friend, narrated various stories and pointed out to trees, plants and nests .

My friend pointed out to the leaves of this plant which resemble a bird, and more specifically an Anhinga.

Anhinga are found throughout Brasil and other Amazonian territories and also along the coasts in central america and the Caribbean.
On google search I could not find the name of the scientific or common name of the plant.

I told my friend about the Meskwakia and the elders who taught me to communicate with the trees and was happy to hug and greet a large tree.

Do you remember Ta Prohm? at Angkor in Cambodia?

where the roots of the tree (was it banyan?) crushed strong temples to ruins ?

Strangler Figs also do a similar job.

In the forest they strangle the trees they attach themselves to and then strangle them.

There are rules in the forest and you follow them, what we may think of as a Long Time, for them, it is part of their evolution. My friend said, this tree has been there at least 40 years or more..

there were many nests of birds .the large birds of prey were out hunting..

I have noticed that the indigenous people have keen eyes. I noticed that San of Kalahari could identify small mounds in the desert which was invisible to me and the Aboriginal people of Northern Australia could follow a butterfly that would lead them to an edible root ..while i was wading through mud and heat..

This may have escaped my attention but it was pointed out to me that it was a scratching of a Panther claw and then the Panther leaves a smell to claim its territory.

This I was taught this is the path of a BEAR, which had come this way and crossed to the other side to disappear into the thickets.

Like Ackee fruit of Jamaica, this POND APPLE has to be picked at the right time to eat , otherwise it is poisonous enough to kill.

(I thought of the song by Alejandro Sanz, which we used to sing all the time in Baracoa, Cuba. Corazon Partido)

we were being watched all the time, it was good to give them a wide berth..

then I was taken to a tranquil lake, but was told to avoid going near water which on close inspection were guarded by the soldiers of the realm..

The sun was hot, but within a short walk of about a mile and half, I encountered so much knowledge.

I am grateful to be a doctor to the Indigenous people around the world..

and a message to my Ticuna friend

as soon as it is feasible, I will enter the Amazon forest, near the indigenous village of Nazaret along the River...
