IT IS A MORNA SUNG BY NANCY VIERA

Who writes such beautiful songs?

B. LEZA

until today I did not realize it stands for Beleza. Beauty

There are so many great singers from Cabo Verde. I had a chance to visit the Cabo Verdean Embassy in Havana and the Lady Ambassador (now CV Ambassador to France) insisted that I listen to some CV music!
Who can say they do not like the songs of Cesaria Evora and she has sung many of the mornas of B. Leza.
Who wrote SODADE ..
the very first song I heard of Cesaria when I was reading Anthropology in London?
"Sodade" is a Cape Verdean slow coladeira song written in the 1950s by Armando Zeferino Soares, and best popularized by Cesária Évora on her 1992 album Miss Perfumado. The name is the Cape Verdean Creole variant of the Portuguese term saudade. (Wiki)
She truly had a fantastic band backing her ..

WHAT IS INTELLECTUAL STRESS? AND HOW DO YOU TAKE CARE OF IT ? SYMBOLIC HEALING.

Intellectual stress

It is very seldom written about. Stress is usually associated with emotional stress , even though the word stress was used to denote physical or structural stress in construction . In 1955 the Canadian Hungarian Endocrinologist by the name of Hans Selye popularized the term STRESS to denote the effect on the body (through hormonal actions). Since then the word has become synonymous with any unpleasant situation: stress at work, stress at school, stressful life.

I wonder, did our ancestors lead stressful lives?  Recent research shows that they spent less energy to get their necessary work done, in fact they were good at conserving their energies

Emotional stress is the quotidian  understanding of stress in modern and western societies even though like many other aspects of life in the west, it has spread to the less developed societies as well. Like a great leader of the Caribbean once said: Dont expect equality from Globalization. Right now Globalization, either through surreptitious (the west) or aggressive (China) encroachment, allows the poor in Sahel to see how well the Other are living. It has increased despair and perhaps STRESS.

I would like to define another form of Stress: Intellectual stress. In the words of my good friend and Colleague, Dr Mark from Miami:

Last week, I was overcome by sudden fatigue that left me with no energy and there were many sorts of physical symptoms.

He wrote:

Perhaps your ailment is being available to so many people to help them. That includes a lot of screen time which is an additional visual stimuli to fatigue. I do feel that you are giving a bit too much energy taking care of others and not enough on yourself. And the screen time and all the consultations may be a bit too much. And he added you need Spiritual Healing from Cuba (mentioning a specific name)

Covid 19 has brought all sorts of stress to the millions of people, poor have become poorer, very rich have become richer , and every one is psychologically affected and the Intellectual stress is possibly felt by people who are “burned out”

I was not working in a hospital nor was I taking care of patients with Covid 19.

Then what was the reason of this Intellectual Stress and how does it manifest itself.

I have not been traveling, there was two periods of nine months when I was not traveling at all, domestically or internationally.

Of course the majority the people in the world were in similar situation. But the change from constant traveling to a state of immobility brought in a staleness to my mind that was not imaginable.

Over the course of my travels I had accrued many friends around the world and some of them whom became good friends. In the early days of the pandemic, all of us welcomed the chance to be reconnected to each other. But as the seriousness of the pandemic set in, I was compelled to read and study and sift through so much information which were being put forth by individuals who monger hate and fear rathe than based on the science that which was evolving. My knowledge began to expand at an astronomical rate, with it also came the responsibility of conveying this knowledge to others. As my anthropology professor used to say, for knowledge to be knowledge, you have to be able to transfer it. Conversations, consultations prolonged into the day and night and it was such a pleasure, spending most of the day and some of the night chatting with friends, usually in more than one language. One year into the isolation, even though I was staying in a house in Miami, most of the time occupied by a retired couple, and with no shortage of food, something began to change in my mind and began to be felt in the body.  The brain felt as it was filling up, as if it was being overloaded and that I was annoyed when more than one person was seeking my attention, from a medical knowledge point of view  I have had never a problem sleeping throughout the night and the sleep became interrupted, the total period of time of sleep becoming considerably shorter. Another new soporific phenomenon was the appearance of unpleasant dreams and unpleasant scenes appearing while still awake.

I knew something was amiss. Physically I was well and I was not feeling emotionally unwell, but the etiology became clear after an incident last week.

Once a week I go to my workplace, the other days connected on line. Towards the end of the day I was told of some tragic news that had happened in the community.

I felt as if someone had hit me in the head with a sledgehammer, so immense was the trauma of the event felt by me.

I left the workplace, drove the 35 miles to the place I was staying and fortunately the house was empty so that I could enjoy the silence and tranquility.  But I did not recognize what the extent of how much my body would react to this acute on chronic reaction to the stress that I now call the Intellectual Stress.

I sat down on the sofa in the living room and for the next 16 hours, I was in a profound lethargic phase, where answering the phone became a chore so I put away the phone. Going to the kitchen was out of question. When I regained strength the next day, I could see that multiple messages and telephone calls had arrived from various countries. I am a good correspondent even though I am not a participant in social media, obviously my friends were worried why I had not answered them.

I did not wish to inform all my friends what was happening but chose to inform those carefully chosen: my Cuban sister who is a spiritual healer in Cuba, a close friend in Sao Paolo, Brasil, a colleague and good friend in Mexico-USA border, a Cuban colleague currently in Mexico City, two close friends, one in Miami and the other in Boynton Beach in Florida.

The colleague in Mexico, called a pharmacy near my house (the marvels of Internet) and ordered Pedialyte rehydrating solution and some simple medications for symptomatic relief.  I also kept in touch with these people.

What happened to my body? By day 3, I was recuperating, and I had neither seen a doctor nor was I taking any medications other than the rehydrating liquid.

Here is where the diagnosis of my dear friend from Boynton Beach reverberates the truth:

(I copy it from above )

I agree…

The spiritual help promptly arrived from Cuba. A spiritual MESA or table was set up in La Habana where the spiritual healer could “see” me and prescribe spiritual advice. She has prescribed 21 days  of “treatment” in which she wants me to evaluate certain relationships, a change in the way of living from the immediate past.

I feel well, relieved, with diagnosis and treatment outside of the western biomedical concepts.

And  content in my heart with the lesson that I have learned:

When you have INTELLECTUAL stress, you need a SPIRITUAL healer..

THE BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU.. AVOID WORDS LIKE MOHAMMED, MALAYSIA (OR 25 OTHER FAILING MUSLIM STATES) OR CUBA IN YOUR ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATIONS

There is a poem by that eminent latin american poet who belongs to all PABLO NERUDA

How much happens in a day

and I will tell you what happened to me in a day..

Pablo continues:

Who would have said that the earth
with its ancient skin would change so much?
It has more volcanoes than yesterday,
the sky has brand-new clouds,
the rivers are flowing differently.
Besides, so much has come into being!
I have inaugurated hundreds
of highways and buildings,
delicate, clean bridges

like ships or violins.

Pablo lived at a time when snooping at people's lives had not reached such sophistication. If you are interested in what lies ahead please read the Israeli historian, Yuval Noah Harari.

This morning, I woke up to the news that hundreds of barbers in Afghanistan would be out of work as the ruling Islamist militants have warned them not to trim beards and hair of the Afghan population. Beauty salons are closed too.

Why is this of interest to me, apart from a human rights point of view?

A friend of mine in Malacca needed 250 dollars and I know him well and immediately said Yes. He said he had used a transfer service called WISE and had no problem receiving the amount from his cousin in the USA.

So on the 19th of this month, I sent 250 dollars to my friend in Malacca, Malaysia.

Most people in this world do not know that almost all Muslim males carry the name Mohammed but are identified by other names in their usually very long names, certainly true in Malaysia (perhaps not in Indonesia where the names remind them of their Hindu past and usually single words)

So the full name for transfer of money was Mohammed S…. bin Mohammed Y..  In Malaysia bin means, son of, so his full name has two Mohammed in it.

You must congratulate the Artificial intelligence. It picked up that the fact that 1. The money transfer was going to Malaysia, a designated Muslim majority country with terrorist connections and 2. The person had the attention seeking name Mohammed, not once but twice

The poor man was waiting for his money. He desperately needed it. Today is 27th, a full week later. I received a note from the company.

What is the purpose of this transfer and how do you know your recipient? (please give us a detailed explanation)

What does CUBA in your reference field refer to? (please give us a detailed explanation)

Please confirm if there is any direct or indirect Cuban involvement in this transaction?

I use the moniker CUBA the country or COCHIN a city in India in my communications. To identify this transaction, I had named it DR.CUBA

Uninformed people in USA especially while condemning the economic situation in Cuba, do not comprehend the role of their government in causing the misery in Cuba.

The previous administration choked Cuba by cutting off any sort of financial assistance by ANYONE around the world. I tried to send a small amount of money to a family in Cuba, from Mexico, Brasil and France  (from USA of course it is not possible).. all were negated.

So a simple man in Malacca who has the required name Mohammed does not understand the Taliban request that barbers would be punished if they trim beards. They are related as far as the Artificial Intelligence is concerned.

Just including the word CUBA in your conversation or communication, especially if it involves a money transfer however small it may be, would draw the attention or ire of the USA government.

By the way the communication I received was from Europe as the transfer company is based in Europe.

Such is the power of the Embargo against Cuba by the USA !

The conservative philosophy always has been: If you are not with us, you are against us.

All the enemies of the WEST, the 25 counties mentioned in the Terrorist list plus states like CUBA, VENEZUELA , if they are mentioned in your communications, it will be a red flag.

In this case, the red flags were. CUBA. MALAYSIA. MOHAMMED. Even though I am a Jew, like many of the jews of the Levant and the east, it has an arabic sound to it. God forbid, you try and send money to IRAN ..

PS :WISE money transfers, which I will never use again, after nearly four weeks since i initiated the money transfer, informed me that my money has been refunded to my account and not delivered to a man in need in Malacca, Malaysia

A LOVELY DAY VISITING THE FLORIDA KEYS... TO RECOVER A FORGOTTEN FLORIDA SLOWLY DISAPPEARING

From The National Geographic:

Florida Keys

A key is a small, low-lying coral island. The Florida Keys are probably the most famous keys in the world. A 205 kilometer (127 mile) stretch of road, the Overseas Highway, stitches together the islands of the Florida Keys

As you can imagine, it is an exciting trip and if you have time, to linger. In the name of progress, fast food restaurants, shops and souvenir stores which are so caricatured line the many of the small and big settlements along the highway. But the sea and the flora are the kings here and the sea gives an abundant gift to those who dare to go out.
When my friends offered a chance to accompany them on their drive to Marathon, a small town midlway to the end of the Keys, I jumped at the chance and the day was a very pleasant one

At a restaurant in Marathon by the water (almost everything is by the water), I had a typical american lunch of these parts: filet of fish, in this case the abundant Mahi Mahi and hushpuppies , the round balls you see on the left and home made "cole slaw".

A cuban immigrant owned this eating place and a cuban joined our table. He and I got on well immediately and he was from the fishing village/town of Caiberien in Villa Clara in the Centre of Cuba, well known for its seafood. In fact many restauranteurs from Havana would think of nothing to drive to Caiberien to bring fresh seafood for their customers.

After Lunch we drove to Deer Key and you can see why it is called so. Key Deer were roaming around freely every where in the key.

Mangroves always held a fascination for me. This part of Florida has all the varieties of mangroves and they perform a very important ecological balancing activity. Many a fish and bird call Mangrove their home

In the early years of the 20th century during the heyday of american entrepreneurship and wealth, Henry Flagler regarded as the Father of Miami built a railroad over water and the keys all the way down to Key West. It was destroyed by the Storm of the Century in 1935. You can see many abandoned rail bridges all the way down to Key West, the closest point to La Habana, a mere 90 miles away, but a totally different world.

As the sun was setting, we drove back to Miami. A very pleasant day. I felt closer to Cuba, physically and emotionally.

REMEMBERING SEPTEMBER 11TH.. THE STAB THAT BEGAN AS A TRICKLE NOW FLOODS THE RIVERS OF HATRED IN THIS WORLD

Saturday, September 11, 2021

Miami

Remembering the Terrorist Event 20 years ago in which we all lost so much: mainly an innocence. It was a pivotal moment for those with connections with USA.

20 years later we are once again in a setting of isolation, this time more individual than collective, this time more physical than emotional, this time No religious group is involved or targeted.

20 years ago there was an Unity

Not only in the USA but also around the world

Now, not only countries are divided from one another, China from India, Hungary from Poland, Belarus from Lithuania, Hong Kong is but a memory but within the countries the division is as deep as the rivers of the arctic which were recently revealed under the submerged ice age glaciations. Brasil, USA, Australia come to mind but I think if you analyze each country, I don’t think there is any that can be called cohesive, but only fall into the Just Okay category.

Humanistic sympathy which prevailed the aftermath of the tragedy now has categorized people into so many divisions that we may soon have only a Left-wing dictatorship or a Right-wing dictatorship to choose from, all in the name of progress.

In this last year of this isolation which has affected every single one of us, I was able to observe the depth of sadness and depression that exists in this world. I try to alleviate it a drop knowing that each drop is important in this vast ocean.

USA changed irrevocably in 2001, suspicion of the OTHER was emphasized and now twenty years later it has become the path of no return: the other has become any one who does not believe in a selfish, destructive, conservative ideology. 20 years ago it was United States of America, now it is Dis-United States of America.

Countries close to my heart are all either dictatorial control or lacking in democracy: Iran, Cuba, Myanmar, Malaysia, Cambodia but I have had the privilege of living in countries where I could breathe freedom: France, England, Belgium, Australia, USA, Sweden

I have always struggled with the concept of Freedom. Freedom without the consciousness of the Other is not freedom but tyranny. Obviously in the countries which are close to my heart, there are elements which satisfy my emotions. How I enjoyed being associated with Myanmar! The underlying element is always the sweetness of the people or as you can call the people who live in Cuba, less polluted by the greed of capitalism. Iran where I have many friends whom I cannot visit, I still can see in each one of them the shining lights of their glorious past, my interest being in the classical Persian literature.

Intellect with access to education, Health with access to universal health care, curiosity about the world with access to travel, freedom from the oppression of any religion or caste or creed. Belief in God will not save you if you are not a Good Samaritan here on earth. This is my wish for all the people of this world, those living comfortable lives (when they talk about comfortable, they usually mean, reasonably good wages that they can flash and splash ), security about their lives and the lives of other people (whether the street violence of Caracas, San Pedro Sula or Rio de Janeiro) or the oppression by the State players, dictators like Assad or nincompoops like the Lebanese leaders.

What would I like to do on a day like this?

Take the boat from the Amazonian town of Leticia, upstream to Nazareth, the village of the Ticuna Indians where in their one room clinic, I can meet and offer assistance (health problems and planning for good health).

And to know that there are many places in the world like that where I am welcome.

PS. I have to remember also a personal Loss which was to become a symptom of the sickness of the western mind. A very close friend of mine, under the influence of his Arab lover, called me to say that Jews are to blame for the Terrorist attacks.  Anti semitism has been played well to unite the hatreds among Blacks, Browns as well as Whites in the USA towards this constructed enemy of theirs and also in the  other richer part of this globe.

You cannot expect me to be a friend of an anti-semite.

CONGRATULATIONS TO CUBAN SCIENTISTS: PLEASE WATCH THIS VIDEO: CUBAN RESILIENCE IN FACE OF AMERICAN CRUELTY

No need for me to add a commentary. Al Jazeera reporting from Havana, Cuba. Not the usual vitriol from Miami.

Just a small comparison

La Habana is a centre of Medical Innovation, such as these Vaccines that are being rolled out.

Miami is the centre of Medical Fraud, up to 50 per cent of all Medical frauds committed in the USA  originate in Miami.

EACH ONE OF US HAVE OUR OWN ITHACA... MINE HAS BEEN BARACOA, CUBA BUT IT STARTED IN LEVUKA, FIJI

We are always grateful for friends from yore who introduced us to books or poems or countries or ways of thinking. We are the collective expressions of so many of those experiences.

Who told me about Kavafy and his poem ITHACA ? Certainly I was exposed to it as a student either in Australia or Sweden.

Constantine P. Cavafy, English in full Constantine Petrou Cavafy, pseudonym of Konstantínos Pétrou Kaváfis, (born April 29, 1863, Alexandria, Egypt—died April 29, 1933, Alexandria), Greek poet who developed his own consciously individual style and thus became one of the most important figures not only in Greek poetry but in Western poetry as well. He lived most of his life in Alexandria, Egypt, loved English and French literature, and generally spoke English; even his Greek had a British accent.

part of the poem:

Keep Ithaka always in your mind.
Arriving there is what you’re destined for.
But don’t hurry the journey at all.
Better if it lasts for years,
so you’re old by the time you reach the island,
wealthy with all you’ve gained on the way,
not expecting Ithaka to make you rich.

Ithaka gave you the marvelous journey.
Without her you wouldn't have set out.
She has nothing left to give you now.

And if you find her poor, Ithaka won’t have fooled you.
Wise as you will have become, so full of experience,

you’ll have understood by then what these Ithakas mean.

what stood out in my mind at that time was that ITHAKA like life itself or a spiritual quest, is not a destination but the journey.

Arriving at the new port for the first time,  looking around and feeling with a sense of joy that you are supposed to be there is such a fantastic sensation.

On my journey to Ithaka, I have had that sensation more than once

Baracoa, Cuba

Paraty, RJ, Brésil

and one town relevant to this blog,

Levuka in the island of Oavalu in Fiji.

If I remember correctly, having done that trip more than once, you take a bus from Suva to Natovi Landing  and then catch a ferry for the ride to the Levuka Port. and I remember taking a propeller plane to the airstrip in Oavalu and catching a ride on a lorry to the town over dirt roads and dense jungle. Whatever your mode of transport, you would never be too far away from lush jungle.

Levuka is famous for many of Fiji's "firsts." It was the site of Fiji's first bank, post office, school, private members club, hospital, town hall, and municipal government. Fiji's first newspaper, the Fiji Times, which is still in operation today, was founded in Levuka in 1869. Levuka's Royal Hotel is the oldest hotel in the South Pacific still operating. Historians have not ascertained its exact age, but records show that it was in existence by the early 1860s. Levuka Public School, opened in 1879, was the first public school in Fiji and many of Fiji's leaders in the years leading up to and following independence in 1970 were educated there. The oldest Masonic lodge in the South Pacific, Lodge Polynesia 562 SC, is also to be found in Levuka. It was established in 1875. Levuka was also the site of Fiji's first public electricity system, which began in 1927, three days before the capital Suva was electrified. from WIKI

Walking along the main street with shop fronts unchanged for decades, an old man approached me and introduced himself to me.

I am 90 years old, I remember his face very clearly to this day, but alas do not remember his name and he was one of the last indentured labourers from India to arrive in Fiji which had begun 100 years earlier. I would look for him on my subsequent visits and once was told that he had passed away. I remember his toothless smile and thick glasses and eagerness to be photographed.

Sitting at the patio of the Royal Hotel, looking at the town of Levuka, sipping something agreeable, and thinking of Somerset Maugham .. a nice afternoon in Levuka

That is the day LEO AFRICANUS entered my life.

Two other travellers shared the Royal Hotel with me. Royal Hotel by then was the grand lady, having survived the turbulent history of the past century, not as elegant as her sister hotel in Suva, the Grand Pacific Hotel.

Memory plays tricks on us, I clearly remember the name of one but not the face and the face of the other but not the name. Merce from Catalunya was reading a book Leo Africanus .. Thus entered into my Amin Malouf, the Lebanese writer who now lives in Paris.

As soon as I returned to my cosmopolitan lodgings in Australia, I looked for and found a copy of Leo Africanus. I dont think I spoke Spanish at that time, but many years later I acquired a copy of the book in Spanish as welll, all lost to a broken fawcet in a house in the isolated Indian reservation.

But the interest and the influence is not forgotten.

Leo Africanus

I, Hasan the son of Muhammad the weigh-master, I, Jean-Leon de Medici, circumcised at the hand of a barber and baptized at the hand of a pope, I am now called the African, but I am not from Africa, nor from Europe, nor from Arabia. I am also called the Granadan, the Fassi, the Zayyati, but I come from no country, from no city, no tribe. I am the son of the road, my country is the caravan, my life the most unexpected of voyages." Thus wrote Leo Africanus, in his fortieth year, in this imaginary autobiography of the famous geographer, adventurer, and scholar Hasan al-Wazzan, who was born in Granada in 1488. His family fled the Inquisition and took him to the city of Fez, in North Africa. Hasan became an itinerant merchant, and made many journeys to the East, journeys rich in adventure and observation. He was captured by a Sicilian pirate and taken back to Rome as a gift to Pope Leo X, who baptized him Johannes Leo. While in Rome, he wrote the first trilingual dictionary (Latin, Arabic and Hebrew), as well as his celebrated Description of Africa, for which he is still remembered as Leo Africanus.

Image: Yahyá al-Wasiti, Scholars at an Abbasid library, 1237. Bibliotheque Nationale de France.

I am forever grateful for that introduction to Leo Africanus at the Royal Hotel in Levuka in the island of Oavalu in Fiji Islands. Suva was one of the towns I had thought of living for a while but now the images of the streets of Suva recede into oblivion.
But what I would not do, do spend an evening at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva !!
Whether I am headed to Suva or Baracoa or Paraty (this is more likely) I will keep these lines from Leo Africanus

I come from no country, from no city, no tribe. I am the son of the road, my country is the caravan, my life the most unexpected of voyages.

I will travel endlessly, untiringly, excitedly, patiently, passionately until I too become Yehuda Australis...I wait for you in Paraty.

Poem by Pablo Neruda.  Pido Silencio

Ahora me dejen tranquilo.
Ahora se acostumbren sin mí.
Yo voy a cerrar los ojos
Y sólo quiero cinco cosas,
cinco raices preferidas.
