EFFECTIVE ALTRUISM, ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE AND THE RAPID CHANGES OCCURRING IN THE PLANET SOCIETY

The temperature outside is a pleasant 20 C, much cooler than the 34 C, in this presqu'île de Quiberon, Brittany.

A very good article arrived from The New York Times, which I consider to be the best newspaper in the world. and read The Economist, you can be up to date with what is happening in the WORLD, not just in the village (regardless of the population) where you live.

This article made me think very fondly and relevantly about my younger brothers Shimon and his wife Avital in Israel and the other, Mordecai and Gretel in Florida.

You would see why.

The article was written by Kevin Roose, a technology correspondent for NYT.

He has explored the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence and was started talking about an app developed by a SF company, that converts texts into vivid images, real and illusory.

Being a social scientist, as I read through the article, two

objects caught my attention .
  • AJEYA COTRA
  • EFFECTIVE ALTRUISM

WHO IS AJEYA COTRA ?
Ajeya is a Senior Research Analyst at Open Philanthropy. She’s currently thinking about the likelihood that powerful AI systems may be misaligned, and what technical work may help to reduce that risk. Previously, she worked on estimating when transformative AI might be developed, estimating the expected returns to funding across different longtermist cause areas, and thinking about how worldview diversification could be implemented in budget allocation. She joined Open Philanthropy in July 2016 as a Research Analyst. Ajeya has a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from UC Berkeley, where she founded the Effective Altruists of Berkeley student group and taught a course on effective altruism.

WHAT HAS SHE PREDICTED?

Ajeya Cotra, a senior analyst with Open Philanthropy who studies A.I. risk, estimated two years ago that there was a 15 percent chance of “transformational A.I.” — which she and others have defined as A.I. that is good enough to usher in large-scale economic and societal changes, such as eliminating most white-collar knowledge jobs — emerging by 2036.

But in a recent post, Ms. Cotra raised that to a 35 percent chance, citing the rapid improvement of systems like GPT-3.

“A.I. systems can go from adorable and useless toys to very powerful products in a surprisingly short period of time,” Ms. Cotra told me. “People should take more seriously that A.I. could change things soon, and that could be really scary.” (from the article)

Whether you are an optimist or a pessimist about AI, if you have a children or grandchildren, take heed, things are happening at a faster rate than you can comprehend and the history of the future is acceleratingly, menacingly close (think of Yuval Noah Harari and read him)

A lot of people agree that many many hands on jobs now we take for granted would become obsolete in the next couple of decades. In my own field of Medicine, being acquainted with our beloved Start Up Nation, ISRAEL and their fantastic contribution in the field of Technology and Science, I can predict that many of the newly created positions in the field such as Mid Level Providers such as NP or PA or auxillary workers would disappear or diminish in importance. Treatment would go from blasting the disease to micromolecular management (think of Oncological treatment now where poison is poured which blasts the mitotic cells into oblivion, that is the best we have, to picking out one by one the millions of mischievous cells, and this will be done by a machine, of course)

For a traveller, sadness is about the inequality that exists in the world but technology while creating a large cache of people unable to contribute to its milieu would make the technology available on a more equitable basis. Just check how much a PC with 25 mb of RAM cost in 1990s and how much a PC with far far far more powerful cost now, just a fraction of the price!

This is where ALTRUISM and PHILANTHROPY steps in. I remember with disgust when an Exploitative co worker said his work was SELFISH ALTRUISM, doing good things for himself and his family. I was told of altruism by my own father who fought in Burma, so that the people would be free (alas even in 2022 they are not).

While many global names have been attached to Effective Altruism, the Melbourne born Jewish moral philosopher seems the progenitor of these thought processes.

Peter Singer BA Melbourne DPhil Oxford, from Melbourne Australia is currently a Professor at Princeton U, USA.

from wiki

Effective altruism (EA) is a philosophical and social movement that advocates "using evidence and reason to figure out how to benefit others as much as possible, and taking action on that basis". People who pursue the goals of effective altruism are labeled effective altruists.

Common practices of effective altruists include significant charitable donation and choosing careers based on the amount of good that the career achieves, which may include the strategy of earning to give. An estimated $416 million was donated to effective charities identified by the movement in 2019, representing a 37% annual growth rate since 2015. Famous philanthropists influenced by effective altruism include Sam Bankman-FriedDustin Moskovitz, and Liv Boeree. Popular cause priorities within effective altruism include global health and development, animal welfare, and risks to the survival of humanity over the long-term future.

The philosophy of effective altruism emphasizes impartiality, with broad applications to the prioritization of scientific projects, entrepreneurial ventures, and policy initiatives estimated to save the most lives or reduce the most suffering. Whether or not effective altruists should consider difficult-to-measure but potentially high-impact interventions such as institutional or structural change remains controversial.

The movement developed during the 2000s, and the name effective altruism was coined in 2011. Several books and many articles about the movement have since been published, and the Effective Altruism Global conference has been held since 2013. By 2022, EA had become a billion-dollar movement.

YouTube has Peter Singer's well received TED TALK

here is a taste of his talk

As AI would afford us greater opportunities, those who select that path

could generate money and materials so that they can help millions

of others who will be left out of this surge of economic movement.

We should encourage younger ones to have a good philosophical

upbringing and then let them use their altruistic thinking to study

and educate themselves to become effective altruists.

Perhaps it is our history or philosophical inclinations of those who

influenced us, many of us, especially among my people have

already chosen this path.

From ME ME ME to US US US .. not just our people but the

Humanity itself ..

To me, this has always be explanation or responsibility of being

People of the Book or The Chosen People

An example of the new generation thinking like this is illustrated

by one of my nieces from Israel, who is 8 years old

she asked the teacher

What is the purpose of us being here on earth?

The teacher thought the little one wanted to know how she came

to be on earth. I know that, but my question is what is the purpose

of us being here .

The clever teacher reverted the question.

Why do you think we are put on this earth?

The little one without hesitation answered

We are put here, so that we can study, study sciences, and make

new discoveries SO THAT WE CAN BE HELPFUL TO OTHERS..

With MISCHPOCHAH like that I feel the planet is in safe hands.

My other younger brother, helps projects with financial support

he can be more effective if he did it just by himself. I am hoping

that we can set up a project (a medical one, as we both are

physicians) in Suriname for the prevention of chronic metabolic

diseases.

The question, especially in the individualistic societies like USA ,

these days is   What have you done for yourself, meaning

materialism and quantity and in the near future, the questionwould

change to

What are you doing for others ?

I am proud to belong this family of entrepreneurs, intellectuals,

incubators of ideas

merchants and philanthropists who would leave a mark on

planet

during our brief stay here and as we say: May we leave behind

a good name.

FROM CARHAIX TO CUBA : CASUALIDAD NO SON TAN CASUAL

Many years ago I remember seeing an CD with a lovely name :

and enjoyed the music, Cubans and African musicians singing classic Cuban songs..

Today walking along the side alleys of NANTES in France, I came across something that brought ROBERT-TO into our lives.

I have a good friend in Nantes with whom I share the passion of travel and whenever meet we talk about travel, recently more and more about Morocco. He has been to some of my favourite haunts, Cochin in Kerala, Rangoon and Baracoa in Cuba..

He led the way and we came across a nondescript gallery, the outward appearances belying what was inside for a lover of Cuba.

It pleased me, no end, seeing black and white photographs of so many cuban musicians.

I introduced myself and very soon we realized that we both love Cuba with a fervour not found usually among people who are not born there. we reminisced about so many things. The lady who was in the shop/gallery and she spoke Spanish well, so the conversation was conducted in English French and Spanish.

I was in Nantes to show two children who had never seen the Chateau of the last Duchess of Brittany, Anne who became the Queen of France. She is very fondly remembered even though she lived in the 16th Century and many of the Breton girls still cary some version of anne in their breton names. Impressive.

I was with two Breton friends, both grew up in traditional fashion in the middle of Brittany, whose parents barely spoke French and their grandparents none, such was their immersion in Breton culture. They wanted to know where Roberto TO came from and imagine their surprise to learn that Roberto TO was born in Carhaix in the central region of Brittany and one of the men knew the villages of the origin of Robert-TO's mother and father which was very close to his own ancestral village . My Breton friends live now in Nantes and Quiberon in Brittany.

CUBA and CARHAIX and a piece of universal love and understanding..
The lady who spoke Spanish well was also Bretonne and had served the French embassy in various places, including Mexico City where she learned Spanish. She had lived in Madagascar, Benin, Morocco and Algeria. Her own daughter lives in Auckland after a stint in Montreal.

So if you open your heart, the world will come to you. But it is YOU close the world out, in the name of this or that .

ROBERT-TO as you may have guessed is on the left..

we talked and talked and then sat down at the cafe next door for a glass of wine.. knowing fully well that there would be more wine or drinks to come in Nantes or La Habana ...

DO NOT SEARCH FOR PEOPLE TO MEET, THOSE WHO YOU NEED TO MEET WILL COME YOUR WAY, SAID MY MESKWAKIA TEACHER

My introduction to the world of Native American people propitiously began with the traditional tribe of MESKWAKIA and I have to be grateful to them, as I ended up dedicating my medical professional life to the prevention and treatment of Chronic Diseases among the Indigenous peoples of the world.

Among other words of wisdom, "Dr" Brown imparted were: As long as you are a good person, you do not need to try and understand the ill behaviour of other people (I had asked her about someone in Australia). She also said: Do not waste your time looking for people to meet , as the people whom you need to meet will come your way.

It has turned out to be true as recent as the last week when I was sitting in seat 2 A on an Iberia airlines flight to Marrakech after an overnight (good and comfortable) flight, also on Iberia, from Tel Aviv to Madrid.

Somehow we began talking about aviation, our favourite airlines and countries in the Gulf Region they come from. I did not ask him of his profession, neither did he of my occupation. As the plane was descending into Marrakech in Morocco, I had the impulse to give him my card, and introduced ourselves by name. He is from an European country and commuting between his homes as he works from home. As he left the aircraft he said, i will send you a message on your  account which I received a couple of hours later as I was settling into my riad in Marrakech near the Djem al Fina square crowded with tourists and moroccan families .

The message read: If you are free tomorrow night, please have dinner at my home. I will send you the address and the time for a repas later.

I had a bottle of Spanish Wine nothing special to write home about, a Familia Torres Verdejo 2021, which had a rating of 3.7/5 on Vivino app, the lower limit of drinkability for most people!

the evening was still warm, remember we were only a few hundred kilometers away from the Sahara, i walked along the Medina and the souks and then on to the broas derb (street) of the Kasbah near the Palace. during the 20 minute walk I was greeted by almost every moroccan with whom I made eye contact, and they all said. WELCOME .. a happy people, a friendly people, mostly Berber so different from their Arab brothers..

It was interesting to note that as we approached the kasbah the roads became much broader, at other centuries, armed vehicles had to be transported through these alleyways?

The entrance to the house gave no clue to what lay beyond. A narrow pathway and another long passage led to the centre of the house. Riad is a general term used for house, even though the original meaning is Garden. this Riad did really have a garden.

nothing but but surprises awaited me as i toured, toured is the word as i had many corners and nooks to discover.

Story about the house slowly unfolded as I was admiring the landscaping and noting the various tropical plants and palms. The finished production of rehabilitation of this 400 year old Riad was the labour of his wife who spent nearly 5 years procuring and overseeing the decoration of this house which had been in disuse over a century.

The position of the riad so close to the palace and its sumptuousness indicated that a high ranking courtier may have occupied this house and fallen into neglect as he or his position fell out of the Royal favour. In any case, the lady of the house had spent nearly five years to bring the riad back to its splendour while modernizing it without forgetting its moroccan roots.

I noticed the star of david in the centre of the tray and was informed that many of the jewish memorabilia left behind when the moroccan jews left en masse for Israel and France and Canada, are to be found for sale in the multitudes of antique stores in the alleys of the medina.

The host was gracious, and our conversation continued about lifestyles, existential questions arising out of it, the changing importance of objects and concepts as we progress through our lives.

Nibbles, or as we call them in Australia, savouries, o aperitif began showing up and this called for a drink, obviament/e!

The rating for this wine was 4.3, a feat very seldom achieved by wines. This is also a lesson that the quality of wine depends upon so many factors that if you just go by the price alone, it usually does not have a good correlation with the drinkability of the wine.

I requested a less sweet wine and the host obliged and it was a delectable one.. Both wines were from France, but the palate is my own..

Our conversation flitted from the geography of Europe and the Middle East .. the austrian alps near Klagenfort, the wines of Slovenia, and we dissected the cultural aspects of certain nationalities, with due respect of course.

It was at that time he asked me, what is that I do? I made it brief, I am a Doctor without Borders, trying to do a little bit of Humanitarian medicine within my own capacities.

He explained that he has been in the field of finance and spends half the year in the Middle East and the other half in Europe with more and more arrivals in Marrakech as the Riad has bloomed into an intimate residence.

the night had fallen and the ambiance of the riad lit up to a dream like existence.

He had sent me a message to say that if i am with friends they are also welcome at the dinner. There were only two of us at dinner as his wife was away in Europe doing a course in Calligraphy.

The words of "Dr" Brown of the Meskwakia rang in my ears: here i am in Marrakech Morocco and about to have dinner with a person, with whom a fluid conversation about the world flows and there were no points of discontent or conflict in our world views even if we were in two different, very different, worlds of endeavours.

With my close friends M and G W, we have long conversations but we have a long history of personally shared and professional curiosities as well as sharing of a world view of our ancestors.

With him, whom I had just met, a good feeling of friendship formed very quickly  and that allowed us to talk very freely not only about our own emotions (for example, my deep feelings for the people of Iran and his admiration for the people among whom he works). Israel Cuba all put in an appearance but one thing about this conversation was that we were celebrating life and the planet rather than complaining about what is happening around the world. Two grateful people, surrounded by the friendliness of the country we were in, Morocco, and about to be served a very healthy and tasty dinner, made with much love and care by the Berber lady in charge of the kitchen and served to us by the Berber man in charge of the affairs of the Riad.

I did not envy his lifestyle nor did he of mine but we both respected each others lifestyle which had afforded us plenty of stories to tell: of men and nationalities, flights and cities and food and wine. I truly wished my dear friends and brothers: MGW and SST/A and EW were here enjoying this air and the soon to come food !

three hours had already passed and it was time for me to look around the house.

I was shown a large entrance to a Hamam, now fully renovated , said to be the oldest hamam in Marrakech..
what a wonderful residence, now as well as four hundred years ago!
I am glad I had a chance to enjoy the ambiance along with a wonderful conversation on a balmy night in Marrakech, Morocco.
To both the city and the host, I know we will meet again..

I was given a lift back to Djem al Fina, where despite the late hour, all places were crowded and the joy was in the air .
I felt good being in Marrakech
