When I began working with the Indigenous people, I noticed that their metabolism of certain foods differed from their fellow countrymen of European origin. At the same time, observations had been made by nutritionists working with the native people of Australia that Carbohydrate in the form of the native foods were much more appropriate for their metabolism than the carbohydrates of the SAME AMOUNT of Australian-European food.
I realized that just emphasizing on QUANTITY ie this much carbohydrate and that much protein may not have significant meanings for the Native People whose food has been affected by the FATAL IMPACT of European colonization as well, which is continuing (the stores selling just coca cola products in 2 litre bottles along the Amazon River)
Most Asian countries are contributing to the Obesity epidemic and it is good to remember that the measure of obesity in the European (ie BMI Kg/M2 of greater than 30) does not reflect just obesity in the Asians (25 kg/m2 in Asians may already produce deleterious metabolic consequences)
Childhood Obesity in Asia is worrisome with Malaysia taking the first Prize.
Most RICH countries with recently modified economic status have become fat, this include the richest countries on the planet (most of which are in the Persian Gulf) plus USA as well as UK, Australia and NZ..there are many more)
When it comes to health USA does very poorly for a rich country, it comes at a low 35th in World Health Indices. The top ten healthiest countries are (measured in 2019)
Spain Italy Iceland Japan Switzerland Sweden Australia Singapore Norway ISRAEL
You can dissect each of them and understand why anthropologically they are in the list .. Singapore and Malaysia (racially, culturally, linguistically are much identical but politics differ and that is reflected in the lack of Health in Malaysia), whereas Singapore is one of the richest and healthiest countries on earth.
In Richer countries it is the POOR that is obese and in the poorer countries it is the richer who are obese (India for example)
Also eating habits are very personal and depends upon the knowledge of Nutrition. The table that is set on the right: cheddar cheese, olives, Pistachios is at the home of a doctor in Havana, Cuba. Eating is a HUMAN RIGHT but eating well is a PRIVILEGE.
The word Multiculturalism is dead and in my opinion Cultural Diversity would also slip along the same path. People of Colour is a favourite american saying, forgetting that the entire populations have some colour or other.
Two congresswomen who are active in the US Congress claim to be women of colour (with no luggage of the oppressed people), because of admixture in one case from the Caribbean islands and the other being an Arab descendant from the Middle East. Arabs from the Middle East are classified as white and perhaps more homogenous than diverse. In an elegant study done in Cuba, a caribbean island of mixed origins, they found that almost all CUBANS whether appearing WHITE or BLACK had elements of Spain, Africa and Native Cuba.. It is a total fraud to claim to be a Native Cuban just because your DNA studies showed 2 per cent Native Origin, you need to have a culture associated with it.
I think it was the British Anthropologist Jack Goody who said Cultural does not mean Natural, people tend of confuse the two terms in my opinion. For example, I like French Food because I lived in Paris and Brussels for many years, that does not mean that it is what is natural for me. When I had my microbiome determined, I was surprised to see so many of the food that my microbiomes did not like but my taste buds did.
In France I was physically and emotionally a foreigner whereas most migrants to USA while they adopt to being Americans and begin eat like americans without realizing that physically they still belong to the countries of their origin.
It was believed that Indian migrants died earlier when they migrated to the USA (by about 15 years), the mechanisms were unclear, but as Cardiovascular mortality along with Nutritional habits have changed in India itself, the early death in the USA may be due to inappropriate nutrition, the stress of being an Immigrant and other cultural conflicts
The King's College London study has shown that the genetic contribution to the Insulin and Triglyceride response was only about 30 per cent. PREDICT study of 400 identical twins and 700 non twins.
Without doubt the ISRAELI scientists, Eran Elianav and Eran Siegel from Weizmann Institute in Tel Aviv and Uri Lesmus from Technion are in the forefront of these innovations about PRECISION NUTRITION WHICH IS PERSONALIZED NUTRITION WITH LOTS OF SCIENTIFIC DATA INCLUDED and individualized.
