AFTER TEN WEEKS OF HOME ISOLATION, THE FIRST BREATH OF NATURE MIAMI

THE REMARKABLE LIFE OF DR. FAIRCHILD
I had read two about and by him and had visited many of the places he had been and thought of the time he travelled in those climes and brought back specimens and also cotton so that USA would be much more plant diverse.

David Grandison Fairchild (April 7, 1869 – August 6, 1954) was an American botanist and plant explorer. Fairchild was responsible for the introduction of more than 200,000 exotic plants and varieties of established crops into the United States, including soybeans, pistachios,] mangos, nectarines, dates, bamboos, and flowering cherries. Certain varieties of wheat, cotton, and rice became especially economically important.

this cover photo had intrigued me always and many years later my good friend Pak Joe of Bogor arranged for me to spend an afternoon at the Bogor Botanical Gardens.

WHY IS THAT CUBAN MEDICAL MAGNANIMITY NOT COVERED BY THE MEDIA ?

Cuba sends medical brigades to Kuwait and Guinea Conakry

It makes the other countries feel SMALL that they are not WILLING to help poor countries and also countries in need such as Kuwait.

Note that the majority members of this brigade are women!

Parte hacia brigada de 298 especialistas de la salud, quienes ayudarán en el enfrentamiento a la pandemia en ese país.

Cooperación y solidaridad deben primar en la respuesta conjunta a la .

I would like to know which other rich country can afford to send 298 specialists? when a sister country like KUWAIT requests help ? All of them are experienced with other International Medical Missions to help their brethren.

I have lost count of the countries that Cuba has sent doctors, specialists, nurses to help with the care of Covid19 virus..
It is more than 25!
Also the Cuban invention Interferon alpha now is available for purchase by countries to help in the treatment of Covid 19 ..

I salute you, my fellow health care workers, International Humanitarian Medicine specialists for your generosity and unselfish desire to serve the poor ..

A SPECIAL SHABBAT SHALOM FROM MIAMI

The Sun has set in Miami, the three stars have appeared, bursting through the still blue skies.
Today is a special welcome to the Shabbat
I prepare to light the candle and say these ancient prayers.
For an elder in an island to the south, weak of body but strong of spirit, to give resilience
A good friend, preparing for surgery at French Hospital in Hanoi, Vietnam. I know all will go well
My dear friend along Copacabana beach, to bring balance to her heart and mind and dreams and bliss to her days.
I pray for Brasil, especially the Indigenous people along the River Amazon; also their relatives in Colombia. Saint Martin
I heard from the driver of the Lighthouse Hotel in Fort Cochin, he always me his wishes.
A Little Star from our Cuban skies.
For the moment I feel united with my sister and my friends in Havana Cuba and Baracoa and Mandinga in the east of the Island.
Dear friends who with their kind thoughts have protected me from boredom and with their good wishes protected my body from Linz, Cologne, Sri Racha, KL, my innumerable friends from Cochin in Kerala
A strong brotherly hug arrives from Buenos Aires
Rio de Janeiro, slovenian mountain girl
A nursing student doing a PhD degree, I pray for her welfare before she goes home
My UmonHon Family
My family in Haifa, friends in Iran, special eyes in Brussels ..

all of you are in my heart at the moment , I have your protection and I feel that strength
Shabbat Shalom.

My sister fixed shepherd's pie
just delicious..
I say thanks to have all of you in my life...

WHO YOU ARE IS FAR MORE IMPORTANT THAN WHAT YOU ARE

On making his discovery, the astronomer had presented it to the International Astronomical Congress, in a great demonstration. But he was in Turkish costume, and so nobody would believe what he said.
Grown-ups are like that . . .
Fortunately, however, for the reputation of Asteroid B-612, a Turkish dictator made a law that his subjects, under pain of death, should change to European costume. So in 1920 the astronomer gave his demonstration all over again, dressed with impressive style and elegance. And this time everybody accepted his report.

I remember giving a lecture at a large conference in Honolulu, at that time I was dressed in a jacket, torn in places, from the Highlands of Vietnam of Hmong people and with my long hair braided and adorned with silver ornaments of the American Indian.
No one listened to me . My topic was the Cultural Aspects of Health Care
Some years later, I gave a similar lecture to a group of doctors in Omaha, Nebraska dressed in a dark suit and fine shoes and the talk shared many of the points I had formulated in Honolulu. This time I was listened to and given accolades..
Can someone remember a similar story from Rabindra Nath Tagore?

If I have told you these details about the asteroid, and made a note of its number for you, it is on account of the grown-ups and their ways. When you tell them that you have made a new friend, they never ask you any questions about essential matters. They never say to you, "What does his voice sound like? What games does he love best? Does he collect butterflies?" Instead, they demand:"How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much money does his father make?" Only from these figures do they think they have learned anything about him.
If you were to say to the grown-ups: "I saw a beautiful house made of rosy brick, with geraniums in the windows and doves on the roof," they would not be able to get any idea of that house at all. You would have to say to them: "I saw a house that cost $20,000." Then they would exclaim: "Oh, what a pretty house that is!"
Just so, you might say to them: "The proof that the little prince existed is that he was charming, that he laughed, and that he was looking for a sheep. If anybody wants a sheep, that is a proof that he exists." And what good would it do to tell them that? They would shrug their shoulders, and treat you like a child. But if you said to them: "The planet he came from is Asteroid B-612," then they would be convinced, and leave you in peace from their questions.

The above is an episode from the famous book The Little Prince an eternal children's book written for adults.
The adults always want to know how much things cost or how much a person is worth, not the quality of the person.
American Indians on the other hand, are very qualitative, when they meet you, they do not ask mundane questions like Where did you study Medicine? But may ask, are you a father or brother or son ? Once I was asked, Do your people dream ? and another patient of mine was very content with my answer: In what language do you pray, he asked very seriously and when I said we pray in our language, he was very happy.
Whenever I hear people quoting the price of things, I know that they do not value things , that might include you also. Good friends are going to emphasize your qualities and as my very good friend ES in Melbourne said one day:
You bring your friends closer to their dreams..

That is how I measure success and not by position nor wealth.

Modesty of a medical professional was demonstrated by an incident when Sir Zachary Cope, one of the best known physician of his time in England, arrived to check on a patient and when the nursing sister, who did not recognize him, asked him to wait in the ante room, he patiently did until some one rescued him.
Many of the modern doctors would have bellowed out, if a ward nurse refused them admission, Do you know who I am?
An awful person, I would say.

I remember well what the elder of the UmonHon tribe, a Mr Blackbird said to me :
It is a good person that becomes a good doctor.

MIGRATION AND LIFE NEW OUTLOOK AT THE POST CORONA TIMES

MIGRATION THROUGH LIFE
A threat to the Planet as well as at an individual level is/has been present over the past three months. We have become open to the sufferings of others as well as concentrating on our own survival.
Your worldview depended upon the risk you perceived from the danger.
For a 30 year old outdoor enthusiast, this posed little threat, even though he may not realize he is a threat to others, in higher risk categories.
Our concept of OTHER also defines our worldview.
There was a time in England when they said , the Other starts at Calais.
(Native Australians in Thursday Island)
I grew up in Australia and the idea of racism was only against the Other who was visible and not invisible. People of African Origin regardless of their continents were very rare. Chinese was synonymous with bright students studying under government scholarships, the onlhy middle eastern people you met were those from Israel and Lebanon. The migrants were predominantly Italian and Greek and Yugoslav. And we all felt that we were selected children of humanity.
PS. All these innocence was to be lost when multiracial immigration took place in Australia
Having grown up in such an ambiance has been a privilege. When I became a world traveler later on, people were not distinguished by their colour but by the interest they kindled in me whether you were an Akka in the streets of Yangon or a Kavango just across the border in Namibia.
(the original people of Southern Africa)
For majority of the people on this earth, we cannot choose the country of our identification, much like the saying, You cannot choose your family.
But you can choose your friends.
Thus the attitudes towards the other, is a chosen one.
To choose to leave where one is born or raised, there are push and pull factors.
Economic incentives and  warfare that destructs your world comprise the majority of the movements of the people. One is PULL factor , such as the attraction of USA to the Central American people and the other is PUSH factor as happened in Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, Syria.
But there are a substantial number, not in millions, who wish to migrate. There are people with skills which for reason or another becomes obsolete in their country and in many times incongruous with the country’s sense of advancement. Majority of the developing nations want to concentrate on projects and innovations that are economically beneficial rather than beneficial to the individual and the society.
I cannot think of many governments where the economic developments go hand in hand with the social development. I remember addressing a group of students in Singapore, studying something related to Business which most of them tend to do: How do we become happier? I am surprised how little attention the Asian universities pay to social sciences, many of them dismissing Anthropology as colonial or the luxury of the western nations. The social scientists I have met in Asia, especially the anthropologists in Malaysia, are not impressive in that they cannot liberate their minds from the restraints the society places on them. It is like trying to be vegetarian in Namibia ?
(Orang Asli, the original people of Malaysia, all others are Immigrants)
The latest push factors are politics and populist leaders who are elected by a non representative proportion ignorant of dangers of demagoguery. We have had a slew of leaders of such nature, Trump in USA and Bolsanaro in Brasil.
Whenever a populist is elected the disparity in economic status and the neglect of the social justice is augmented. A Prison is a Prison regardless of how beautiful it is. To be happy it is not sufficient to move to a larger prison but you need to leave the prison altogether. A major portion of the educated Malaysian Chinese and Indians have left the country, despite the fact that their country is one of the more beautiful in South East Asia, the standard of living is reasonable and the food excellent. Happiness does not come from what is outside of you but it comes from what is inside of you .
Oh Pobre Brasileiros! A government so much like USA but so far away from the principles of USA democracy..

It has been pointed out that countries governed by woman all have confronted this epidemic with fantastic results.
Jacinda Arden of New Zealand,  Angela Merkel of Germany, Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan, Katrin Jakobsdottir of Iceland, Sanna Marin of Finland, to give a few names..
Perhaps to heal this planet we need more and more women leaders, young and old.
Women are natural healers.

In the meantime, let us wish well for all the displaced people for one reason or another, within their own countries, outside their countries, within their societies, within their families and within themselves..

THE FIRST DAY OF THE END OF SOCIAL ISOLATION FOR ME , IN MIAMI

For me, today is the day, the social isolation in Miami which I had gleefully accepted, stopped.
Lovely day to walk around the Botanic Gardens which had been part of me during my days in this city as Medical Student as well as a trainee in Endocrinology.
Later on, I will write about this botanical garden and its fascinating history..
Time to remember the numerous gardens visited around the world, the memorable ones being
Nong Nooch near Pattaya in Thailand
Jardin Botanico, La Habana
Central Pepito Tey, antigua Jardin Soledad, Cienfuegos
Kew Garden
Melbourne
Cape Town
Durban
the list goes on and on ..

NOT YET READY TO FLY MY FAVOURITE AIRLINE. QATAR AIRWAYS

I was looking through some of my blogs about the multiple journies on Qatar Airways, my favourite airline. I was feeling nostalgic for the lack of QR in my life for the past five months!
So was happy to hear that they would be soon flying to some of the destinations that are my routine haunts. Then they described in detail how they would protect our health and safety ..my heart dropped completely to the floor..
Flight Attendants dressed as Nurses with PPE and the food served in Hospital cafeteria style.. NO NO NO
No, I want to keep the memory intact of the lovely relationship I have had with Qatar Airways for 8 years and always had maintained a Platinum or Gold status with them, including for year 2020!
It is like you want to keep the best of a love affair that has gone sour..
went back and looked at some of the blogs and the photos
Qatar Airways Business Class Lounge, the service continues..
A wonderful flight from Doha to Boston with Maria from Romania in the lead
and this was their offering, in flight..
why would I want to fly any one else ?

I always paid attention to the prayer before the flight took off. I am sure it is powerful and comforting even though I do not know the words
Always have a good book to read and ..
 Champagne .. a flute
Never been disappointed in the Qatar Airways food..

No, I rather remember this love affair as it was .. and not to confront my dear friends in their PPE serving me out of cardboard trays?

September 1, when every thing normalizes you will see me boarding the flight QR 778 from Miami to Doha for a short break there .. and then on to ?
Kuala Lumpur?
Cochin?
We will see..
