AM ISRAEL CHAI: HOLOCAUST, HUBERMAN AND ISRAEL
PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
The clock was turned back one hour. My sleeping
pattern had been disrupted by crisscrossing of continents. I woke up at 3 AM (4
AM), unable to sleep. I checked emails, there was an email with a video
attachment.
I decided to watch it.
A complicated story but a connected story, a
human story, a touching story that involves:
A school boy who hid from the Nazis in the polish
village of Czestochowa
The brutal Nazi commander Reinhardt of the Nazi
Police who sent almost all the Jewish inhabitants of that village to Treblinka
A local born violinist, Bronislaw Huberman, who
at the age of 9 could play a complicated Brahms concerto.
A Stradivarius gifted by a German philanthropist
to the violin prodigy, in Berlin.
The Birth of the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.
(for many years the conductor was the Indian born Parsi, Zubin Mehta)
Joshua Bell, the American violinist who saw the
same Stradivarius at a concert, stolen from Huberman many years ago at Carnegie
Hall by a member of the orchestra (who went to jail)
Later he was able to buy the Stradivarius at a
London shop. (4 million dollars)
The young boy who ended up in the USA, became
rich in Maritime Insurance Industry, became passionate about his native village
and wanting to reconcile organized a concert

BRAHMS: Violin Concerto in D Major, Op. 77
Gabriel Chmura, conductor
Gabriel Chmura, conductor
With Joshua Bell
Playing Huberman’s violin
The very same concerto which Huberman had
mastered many years earlier
At the concert hall of Czestochowa, which was
built on the grounds where the grand
synagogue once stood there which the Nazis destroyed.
How could one stop crying, at the thought of so
many lives(mostly Jews) lost during that brutal period?
What was painted in the cataract of the eyes of
the Nazis?
So much human potential wasted and wantonly
destroyed.
The murdered ones had committed no crime
They were Jews! That is all..
Why do they hate us, a young Jacobo Timmerman asked his mother.
They hate us, because they don’t understand us,
said the mother.
Now I see the resolve in the minds of so many of
us that
ISRAEL MUST LIVE
